With the world in a somewhat standstill, companies closing, jobs suspended, many have turned to working online. And even those who are not laid off were given the option to work at home. Working online is not a new thing though, when the internet was new, people started exploring the option of using it to work remotely, saving a lot of hours spent on commuting. In the process putting in more productive hours dedicated to the job or home work, even kids.

As a Virtual Assistant
Becoming a virtual assistant is one of the most popular online jobs as is the most known of the ways to earn from home. Briefly explained, the job specifies one to provide assistance in different aspects to clients remotely from a home office. Virtual assistance has a large scope, as many jobs can now be performed remotely and here are some of the more common in the market.
Professional Administrative Assistance
This area include secretarial work, customer service, and data entry among others. Yes, these jobs can both be done online and in a physical office setup. One can write and send emails or letters for the company at home, they can answer queries and support clients while at home, and input data into the company’s database while connected remotely. Very convenient, isn’t it?
Technical Assistance
A lot of companies employ technical support remotely. Web services, for example, have highly-skilled technicians that are not based on site. You could be talking to someone from a different continent altogether and not know it.
Creative (social) Assistance
Yes, like techical support people, with the tools available, website editing, social media marketing, content writing, can be done in the comforts of one’s home. My husband has worked many days at home during 2020 and still some days until now. Of course, I was able to see his work flows and often he would connect to his office PC remotely to get files and save files there. The internet has really made it easier for creatives to work and save time – that instead of commuting, they can spend time to doing more of their craft.
As I write this piece, I am citing this as a perfect example of content writing while at home – at 6 in the morning, with the sun barely out, and my natural light being reddish-yellow.
When setting up your home office, proper lighting is one of the things you have to pay attention to. While lighting and colour are truly connected to productivity, it just happened that I’m awake and in the mood to write even early this morning.
Invest or Trade
You probably know, subconsciously, that investing and trading can be done while at home, but you never tried because you lack the knowledge to do so (that’s probably me).
Trading is the basic activity of all investors or investment services – simply put: the buying, selling or exchanging of assets. In financial marketing terms, a person trade securities such as shares, currencies, commodities and derivatives.
Investing and/or trading involves risks. It’s a wise thing to learn all the ropes first, ask experts, maybe take a course specialising in it, read, and understand every little detail involved.
Only invest what you are willing to lose and accept that it is somewhat a kind of gamble. One has to keep a sound mind when engaging in these endeavours.
Blog and/or Vlog
The past year proved even more the power of microinfluencers. With most of us staying at home, having more time spent on social media, people are meant to be exposed to many of the brands their friends, families share in helping to promote them. Whether that’s food delivery service, homemade cakes, repair services, and many others.
It also boosted collaborations with many of us.
Family travel blogger Ashley Beougher, in an interview tells us to how she became an influencer after their travel blog/vlog took off. Their family shares their experiences and new adventures to inspire others to do more with their kids – travel-wise, experience-wise. But because of the restrictions today, staying at home means using the resources at hand. This means promoting off social media content and collaborating with people in the travel industry in a way that would inspire others to travel once restrictions are lifted.
Even now, you can start your own blog – in a niche that you are an expert in. Join platforms like GetBlogged, Intellifluence to learn more.
Your Own Travel Agency
Travelling is not as it used to be, as mentioned above. But it doesn’t mean that it will stay this way, once things get better. If you love to travel, like I do, you can invest in your own travel booking portal – this way you have to pay only the base fare while earning too when family, friends, and other people you know book through you.
There are systems you can subscribe to for a fee and use to book flights, make sure that you understand the inner workings before you plunge into this business. Read and ask around someone who works in the industry to learn how it works.
Your Online Shop
With the Facebook Marketplace, selling items has become easier and marketing products has also evolved and become independent on online visibility. You can start with selling items you have at home that you don’t use. Probably a book that you once read and you have no plans of letting dust gather on. You can also sell shoes you used only once because it was a tad small for you. Or you can also sell plants…you can start off with a snake plant, which is a very hardy plant that’s also pretty and easy to grow.
If you have a knack with designing, printing shirts and usable items might be a good way to go. You don’t really need to have a website to sell nowadays, like mentioned above, Facebook Marketplace is already a good start.
Ways to Earn from Home: What Works For You
With the internet making communication easier, working from home is not just a dream come true for most moms, it’s also a safe haven for many of us in these risky times. True, there are jobs that can’t be remotely done, but there are still many ways to earn from home in case you wonder.
Aside from the ones we mentioned above, if you are creative, you can sell your art online. As an architect, you can do projects and engage in contracts while at home. Then there’s online tutoring: whether English, German, Japanese, Korean: all you need is your language skill, a computer, internet connection, skype or zoom, and your confidence.
You can also be an online coach or consultant – giving customers support in your field of expertise. In relation to this, you can also publish a book or course, that you can sell – both in physical format or as an e-book.
There are really numerous ways to earn from home, and it’s not being lazy to do so – it’s just being practical and choosing convenience and safety over anything else.
